After a brief tour of the Hyatt Regency I made my way down to the beach across from the hotel. Next I went to the top of the Aloha Tower. The Aloha Tower is a lighthouse that is considered one of the premier landmarks of the state of Hawaii. Opened on September 11, 1926, the Aloha Tower is located at Pier 9. It has and continues to be a guiding beacon welcoming vessels to the City of Honolulu. At 10 stories and 184 feet of flag mast, for four decades the Aloha Tower was the tallest structure in Hawaii. Next I journeyed into downtown Honolulu and visited the State Capitol and Iolani Palace. The video concludes as I look out onto the Pacific Ocean from the far west side of Oahu. From: timvp.com

Richard and Karen were vacationing in Hawaii in 1977 when they heard the Beamer Brothers' recording of "Honolulu City Lights." But circumstances intervened and the album was never released. The mystery plume started pouring into Kewalo Basin before sunrise. "It was like 5:30 in the morning and I was standing here and then all of a sudden it came all at one time," said Robert St. Romain of Sashimi Fishing Tours. At first light he and other boat owners were stunned by the free flowing plume that turned the water white. "Just was coming out here like crazy just like you see it right now and it muddied the whole harbor in a matter of five minutes." "The whole harbor was just glazed over usually you can see down," said a boater. And it kept coming hundreds of gallons of milky brown fluid every minute. "That storm drain is capable of close to a million gallons a day of water coming through," said Kewalo Basin Harbor Master Charles Barclay. He said he's never seen anything like this. "If it was a sewage discharge or if it was an oil discharge we'd smell it but this is a siltation." "Obviously it's not oil because you don't see any slick on top," said boater Michael de Jong. "I don't know what else it might be. Do you have anything further?" asked Barclay. About a dozen state and city officials were on the scene. Everyone was baffled by the source. ]]> Honolulu, Hawaii Our first trip to America's 50th state, our experience was beyond phenomenal. Staying on the island of Oahu, we were able to enjoy the creature comforts of the big city (Honolulu) while at the same time explore the astounding beaches, the extraordinary beauty of the topography, the quaintness of the countryside. We jam-packed our weeklong voyage with snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, hiking the 700+ foot high Diamond Head, parasailing up to 1000 feet up in the air, jetskiing, visiting the somber Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, attending a luau and driving to Kailua (where I believe I found the best postcard perfect beach) and the north shore all the way to Waimea Bay. This of course, still left us with laying-out-in-the-beach time at world famous Waikiki by our hotel. Indeed, this will not be our last visit to Oahu.

Monday afternoon, May 2, 2011, as land bases tornadoes were unleashing their destructive power all over the mainland, Hawaii was able to enjoy the beauty and wonder of twin waterspouts a few miles out in the Pacific Ocean. On the afternoon of May 2nd, people all over the south side of the Island of Oahu were privy to a beautiful show, for almost 15 minutes two large funnel clouds, or water twisters were seen dancing about, at one point even twisting around each other. This video will allow you to see the waterspout forming and dissolving into nothing. This is a very rare phenomenon in Hawaii, even many Kama'aina have never seen this. Waterspouts are intense columnar vortexes which generally appear as a funnel-shaped cloud or tube of water. They occur over water and are connected to a cumuliform cloud. Basically speaking, a waterspout is a "non-super cell tornado, over water" Waterspouts are usually weaker than land tornados however stronger versions can be spawned by mesocyclones. Contrary to the appearance of the ocean tornado and common belief, Waterspouts do not suck water up into the funnel rather the water you see in the main funnel cloud is the water formed by condensation within the cloud. Waterspouts tend to form in the tropics; however Europe and the Great Lakes have had them on occasion. There are even lake-effect snow waterspouts although they are rare.
